Mining the Atmosphere
CertH2&CO2 Project
I am excited that our proposal was funded and I will start as the PI of the CertH2&CO2 project. The project is associated with the Mining the Atmosphere initiative for removal of excess (man-made) CO2 from the atmosphere, and in collaboration with the reFuel.ch project investigating robust supply paths for sustainable fuels and base chemicals.
Project scope:
Carbon sinks, through the combination of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and storing it in the built environment, represent an opportunity for new carbon-based business models by linking this to the production of carbon-based energy carriers such as green hydrogen (H2). In addition to the necessary technical pathways, H2 and CO2 certificates are increasingly being discussed to provide both trusted verification and market mechanisms critical for systemic adoption. This proposal systemically analyzes the international development of H2 and CO2 certificates. It aims to provide a solid foundation on the technical pathways as well as the state of the art and future key research needs related to both CO2 and H2 certificates. The initiative will contribute to the understanding of the importance, interaction, and effective implementation of both H2 and CO2 certificates, thereby helping to facilitate and scale carbon-based business models.
